News from the Lassiter String Academy

Tuesday’s concert was amazing, and we are very proud of our students’ performances!  Freshman Philharmonic was perhaps the best group of 1st year high schoolers we have had yet, and matched with beautiful performances from Sinfonia as well.  As you all noticed, we are always proud to showcase our Chamber II and Chamber I orchestras representing the most challenging pieces of music.  Excellence is achieved by not only by class participation and practice, but also by private study with world-class musicians.  Most of the musicians in our Chamber Orchestras study privately, either at one of the local shops, or through the Lassiter String Academy, which provides a unique opportunity to have access to wonderful teachers right here on our campus after school.  Please see our website for more information on how you can take advantage of this opportunity for Lassiter, Mabry, and Simpson students to stretch abilities and achieve excellence in their musical studies at a reasonable price.

 Field Trip

The Lassiter Orchestra has been offered a special opportunity to attend a closed rehearsal of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on November 10th.  Our students will be observing the ASO in rehearsal with Maestro Robert Spano and Concertmaster David Coucheron as soloist.  You can view the program here.
This is an approved instructional field trip for Lassiter Orchestra students. On Wednesday, October 26th, 5 members of the ASO will conduct a master class with the Lassiter Chamber I Orchestra. They will perform for our students and work with individual sections.  Students with 5th period lunch are invited to attend.
We are so appreciative for the long-standing support of our Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians and administration!

 Fundraising

JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS!!
Earn money for your spring trip!  All students have Honey Baked Ham order forms and should be out there generating sales.  There are many people in our area who serve HBH foods for the holiday – this should be an easy sell, and is a great way to earn money towards your trip.  20% of revenue generated from individual sales is directly applied to each student’s trip account.

The LHSOA Honey Baked Hams gift card sale runs effective Friday October 15 and runs through Friday December 23.
Click Here for details to Order

Proofs for the Michael Rosser photo fundraiser should be delivered to school by the end of the week.  Students will have about a week to return those with order forms and payment.  Individual photo touch-ups are available to for a nominal fee, we know how picky teens can get about their photos!
Be on the lookout soon for the big poinsettia fundraiser.  Beautiful poinsettias will be available for about $10 each, and adds a nice touch to homes and places of business for the holidays. Don’t go to the hardware store for your plants – buy from the orchestra this year!

CPA Needed for LHSOA Financial Audit

The LHSOA Board of Directors is seeking a CPA with audit experience to perform an audit of our finances as required by our organization’s by-laws.  We would prefer to have a CPA provide this service to us pro bono, or a reduced fee so that our monies can be used for programming for the kids instead of professional services.

Please send a note expressing interest to Jonathan Warner at president@lhsoa.org.

Update on Cruise trip, -Few more chaperones needed;
next payment due Nov 11th!

The Lassiter Orchestra Spring Cruise Trip is scheduled for March 29 – April 3, 2017.
Please consider coming on the trip as a Chaperone, it will be fun!
Chaperones who room with another chaperone will be given financial consideration for the trip. If interested email Ms. Doemel – carol.doemel@cobbk12.org

For students & chaperones making this trip

It is highly recommended those traveling internationally possess a valid U.S. Passport, even though the rules require only a birth certificate and a photo ID for cruises sailing a closed circuit from the U.S. (meaning the ship departs and arrives back to the U.S. following all port calls). Having a passport will make life a lot easier if the ship needs to travel to a different port other than what is on the itinerary due to weather, or if a flight home from Nassau becomes necessary in the event of an emergency. Applying for a passport is easy and can be done online here.
It is also recommended that travelers have a passport photo taken by AAA Auto Club on Gordy Parkway, another travel agent, or a drugstore such as Walgreens or CVS for around $10. The State Department website has a self-photo tool, but it is a challenge to use and there have been instances of applications being returned due to invalid photos. For those who have a passport, please ensure it does not expire within 6 months of our return from the trip. It takes about 6 weeks to process a passport application.

Please make all checks for the trip payable to LHSOA with your child’s name in the memo and a payment coupon, and turn in to the brown drop box it in the front of the orchestra room or mail them to:
